"Good Luck, Good-Bye, Don't Let the Door Hit You on the Ass on Your Way Out" ....or..... "Deleting Friends in Second Life"

"Good Luck, Good-Bye, Don't Let the Door Hit You in the Ass on Your Way Out"....or....."Deleting Friends in Second Life"

Today's post is not very funny. Rather, it is a touchy subject. Why would anyone want to delete a friend? Don't we need all the friends we can get? Yeah, that is how the conventional wisdom goes. But then we are not really talking about "BEST Friends" are we? We are talking about casual friends. For example, you have a light conversation with a gal or guy at the club, and he/she asks to be friends. But you can tell right away that it is not going to "go anywhere," or worse, you consider him/her to be a rude moron. So you accept their initial friendship offer but you delete them later.

And I personally think that is the way to handle it. It sure beats declining someone's friend request to their face. That has happened to me only a few times in sl, but it sure did sting! When asked why, the gal in question responded that she did not add friends easily. She said she wanted to think about who she added very carefully.

Hmmm, personally, I think it is rude to decline someone to their face. No matter what your intentions are, that person feels like they have been slapped.

How about you? What have you done in the above situation? Please leave a comment.

Along these lines, something interesting happened to me recently. A casual "friend" sent me a message that went something like this...

"I am trimming the old names out of my friends list.... I try to reserve my list for people who talk to me or say hello on a regular basis. So if you want to stay on my list, please send me an IM right away."

That struck me as a very clever thing to do, and polite. It also put the fear of god in me because this was a very cute gal that I wanted to get to know. I had been remiss in not saying hi to her, so I quickly corrected my oversight, sending her a message of "Hello, how are you? Yessss please keep me on your list!" Good thing I did, too, because within a month or so we had exchanged numerous chat messages, and become very close friends...*wink!

So tell me dear readers, how do YOU handle the growing problem of a mushrooming "friends list?" Please leave a comment below and tell me how you manage YOUR's.
